Bomb plot doesn't deter local

AIRPORT SECURITY

PLYMOUTH - When a man claiming to have ties to al-Qaida allegedly tried to detonate an explosive device on a Detroit-bound airplane Friday, some Plymouth officials experienced a sense of deja vu.

The incident bore similarities to Richard Reid's attempt to activate pentaerythritol tetranitrate, or PETN, explosives hidden in his shoe aboard a jetliner in 2001. Officials believe PETN was also used Friday.

After Reid's flight was diverted to Logan International Airport, Reid, who also claimed to have ties to al-Qaida, was held temporarily in Plymouth.

Birtwell said there is a good chance that the suspect in Friday's incident, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, would also have been taken to the Plymouth County Jail if his flight had been diverted to Boston instead of Detroit.

"Fortunately for us, the incident occurred a little farther inland," he said.

The incident led to stepped-up airport security measures, which created some delays during the holiday weekend, one of the busiest travel periods of the year.

Asked for their reactions to Friday's incident, many local travelers said they didn't feel any extra nervousness about flying.

"I think that the airlines will take care of it, so I think that I'll be fine," said Kara Nally, who was waiting for the Logan Express in Braintree on Sunday night.

Nally, who was going to be flying from Logan Airport to Tampa, said she had allowed an hour of extra time to get through security.

"I'm not super-concerned," said Emily Bowen, who was flying home to Los Angeles after spending Christmas with her family.

Sisters Janice Lawson of Norwell and Gale Rent of Randolph had just arrived from Nashville. They said they noticed stepped-up security in Boston, but not any extra police.

"I had some liquid in my backpack that went right through," Rent said.
