AN elderly British tourist was fighting for his life last night after being stabbed by two muggers who tried to snatch a friend's handbag in Israel.
Another man, also in his late seventies, received a cut to his hand when he joined in the attempt to fight off the attackers, near the Old City of Jerusalem.

A security guard at the consulate called the police and the attackers ran off.

'One of them is in a very critical condition and is in the trauma unit,' a spokesman said. 'The other is lightly wounded with a cut to the hand.' A friend of the injured men said she was trying to contact their relatives in Britain.
The attacks came at the
embroidered patches end of celebrations marking Israel's 52nd Independence Day, in a year when the country has been enjoying record numbers of tourists.
