Police today warned women to be on their guard after money was stolen from eight pensioners within minutes.

Officers feared the thieves had planned more daytime strikes in towns and city centres - a year after gangs ran similar stings across the south coast last year.

Then, the incidents tailed off after police started handing out special lanyard cords to secure purses to handbags and a number of arrests were made, said PC Nicola Browne.

Fears of a repeat epidemic were raised after the thefts in charity shops in West Street, Fareham, and the Westbury Mall area of Fareham Shopping Centre on Saturday.

The Fareham town centre beat officer said: 'There was a spate last year about this time and it seems like they've started up again.

'Last time it was eastern Europeans, some were arrested and some deported.

'They worked in teams. About six were dropped off and then picked up a short while later to move on to the next town.'
