The University of Mary men's basketball team's winning streak at home went tumbling down the hill at warp speed.
The Wayne replica breitling watches State Wildcats pummeled the Marauders 76-53 on Saturday night at the McDowell Activity Center in Northern Sun action. U- Mary is now 11-1 on Al Bortke Court.
The Marauders are tied for fifth place in the NSIC standings with Concordia-St. Paul. The Wildcats came into the weekend as the No. 7 team in the NSIC. The Marauders split on the weekend, earning a victory over nationally-ranked Augustana on Friday night.
The U-Mary women dropped a 66-55 contest to Wayne State, the No. 2 team in the NSIC, and lost their fourth straight.
The Wayne State men shot a sizzling 71.7 percent from the field, hitting 33 of 46 of their attempts. The Wildcats connected on nine of 11 attempts from the 3-point line.
Jason Jensen led the Wildcats with 25 points, including a 5-of-5 effort from the arc. Amry Shelby added 15 points and Brian Metz 13.
"You have to credit them," U-Mary coach Randall Herbst said. "They walked it up the court and pulled it out. They executed their ball screens. We tried to trap on their first pass and double down on their posts. We had to try something."
While Wayne State blistered the nets, the Marauders experienced the shooting woes. U-Mary shot 19 of 52 from the field for 36.5 percent. The Marauders connected on 10 of 31 tries from the 3-point stripe. Mark Bakkum swished three 3s.
"They came out and played us in zone for 40 minutes," Herbst said. "We didn't respond all that great. We had open looks. Once they got a lead we panicked a bit and rushed a bit."
Eric Erdmann led U-Mary in scoring with 19 points. Anthony Moody added 12.
The Wildcats dominated the glass 33-13. Brett Spiker corralled 11 rebounds to go along with eight points.
