Tracey Powell told police following her arrest and a search of her home in Lipson that she had intended to use the bags for selling jewellery, also on eBay, using the seller name 'mebadgirl'.

However, similar plastic bags were found in an old ice-cream tub in a safe in her kitchen which also contained thousands of pounds'- worth of drugs.

"You have to credit them," U-Mary coach Randall Herbst said. "They walked it up the court and pulled it out. They executed their ball screens. We tried to trap on their first pass and double down on their posts. We had to try something."

While Wayne State blistered the nets, the Marauders experienced the shooting woes. U-Mary shot 19 of 52 from the field for 36.5 percent. The Marauders connected on 10 of 31 tries from the 3-point stripe. Mark Bakkum swished three 3s.

"They came out and played us in zone for 40 minutes," Herbst said. "We didn't respond all that great. We had open looks. Once they got a lead we panicked a bit and rushed a bit."

The men's golf program did not compete last fall, due to a lack of participation. The men's tennis program, which competes in the spring, has had the same problem over the years. U-Mary had fielded a full men's tennis team just once since joining the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference and NCAA in 2006.

"It's been a yearly battle finding enough players," U-Mary tennis coach Bob Cordova said. "One factor is there are no scholarships for men, and because of that, it's difficult to attract quality players that would enhance your program. And often times the players we did have had to find employment off campus and were unable to commit an adequate amount of time to the sport."

Cordova said a lack of men's teams in the NSIC was another factor.

"There are only four conference replica breitling watches schools that sponsored men's tennis and you need five for matches to count as conference matches," Cordova said. "When we played against conference teams, it was like playing an exhibition match. It didn't count for anything, and there is no postseason for men.

"Scheduling was another issue," he continued. "It was difficult to find other teams to play."

U-Mary will, however, continue with its women's golf and women's tennis programs, although the tennis team will not compete this spring because of low numbers. U-Mary hasn't fielded a full-year women's golf team since 2006. It did not compete last fall.

U-Mary athletic director Roger Thomas said dropping men's golf and tennis will enable the school to commit additional resources to the two women's programs.

"As part of an overall strengthening of our Marauders athletic programs to compete at the NCAA Division II level, we are moving strategically to enhance our women's golf and women's tennis programs," Thomas said in a press release. "We want to provide all our teams and student-athletes a chance to be successful."

Cordova said there is a big difference between men's and women's tennis in the NSIC. Twelve of the 14 conference schools have women's tennis, there is a postseason, and more scholarship money is available to athletes.

"It's a much easier situation on the women's side," Cordova said. "We don't have the numbers now, but we're optimistic."

Tim Doppler, who could not be reached for comment Wednesday night, will continue to lead the women's golf team.

Former Democratic Whip Mike Veon is seated at the defense table but former Democratic Leader H. William DeWeese is the guy on trial - - at least by Veon's lawyers.

The complex political relationship between the pair who ran the House Democratic Caucus was detailed last week by Michael Manzo, the Democrats' top staffer who worked for both of them.

On paper, Manzo was DeWeese's chief of staff. But he took his orders from both men. Increasingly toward the end of his tenure he reported almost exclusively to Veon because DeWeese had become a "bit player," Manzo said.

The day Manzo was brought on the job, DeWeese told him he was the leader of 51 percent of the caucus and Veon was the leader of 49 percent. When Veon spoke, he was speaking for DeWeese, Manzo recalled DeWeese saying.

DeWeese remains a sitting representative.

Veon is on trial for allegedly overseeing a $1.4 million secret and illegal bonus program used to reward staffers to work on political campaigns. DeWeese, who for three years has maintained he didn't know about these bonuses, is not charged in the case. In a separate case, DeWeese is accused of using his Harrisburg and district offices, in effect, as campaign offices to run for re- election.

But Veon's lawyers are trying to convince a Dauphin County jury that it's incomprehensible that the No. 1 leader didn't know about or participate in the bonus program. DeWeese was the "head of the food chain," says Veon's lawyer, Dan Raynak.

Ironically, Manzo, the star witness for the state, last week essentially upheld the story of the man, DeWeese, who fired him in 2007. Manzo said Veon approved the bonuses and he never "explicitly" discussed it with DeWeese.

In 2008, Manzo testified at Veon's preliminary hearing that he "believed" that DeWeese knew about the bonuses.

Just about everyone took that to mean Manzo -- save for the smallest ounce of doubt -- was saying that DeWeese knew of and approved the bonuses.

But Manzo said last week he went through Veon because it would have been odd for him to go to DeWeese on financial matters. DeWeese was not a "hands-on guy"; Veon ran the day-to-day affairs of the caucus.

Manzo said Friday DeWeese initiated bonuses for two of his staffers for their campaign work.

Defense lawyers portray Manzo and others cooperating with prosecutors as "liars" trying to save their own skin. Manzo has a plea agreement that cuts down his prison exposure and saves his wife, Rachel, also a defendant in the bonus scheme, from a potential prison term.

Manzo said he gravitated to Veon because DeWeese was "out to lunch." Asked if he meant that literally or figuratively, Manzo said, "Both."

Keep in mind Manzo is bitter about DeWeese and, in another dash of irony, still apparently has warm feelings for the man he's accusing -- Mike Veon. Manzo grew up in Monaca and "idolized" Veon from nearby Beaver Falls, he said. Veon is the reason he got into politics, he testified. He choked up on the witness stand. "I was very close to Mike," Manzo said.

Such has Manzo's life become that he's accusing the man he grew up admiring of multiple felonies.
